What to do in the Hague Netherlands

The Hague pronounced Den Haag in Dutch is the Netherland’s political capital (this is not to be mistaken with Amsterdam which is the actual country’s capital). It is the seat of the government and parliament and where the house of Orange resides. Den Haag can also be distinguished as the UN’s second city due to the number of international organizations it hosts and also being home to the prominent International Criminal Court and International Court of Justice. This is what the Hague is most known for and this international community goes back to more than 750 years ago!

As the Netherland’s third-largest city that sits charmingly along the Dutch coast known as “The Royal City by the Sea” – why wouldn’t you like to come and see what to do in the Hague Netherlands.

See Dutch Masters at Mauritshuis

The Mauritshuis houses a lovely collection of Dutch paintings and masterpieces from the Golden Age. See Vermeer’s famous Girl with a Pearl Earring, Rembrandt’s Anatomy Lesson, Carol Fabritius’s Goldfinch and many other works. The Mauritshuis building is exquisite on its own and was formerly a palace that overlooks the beautiful Hofvijver pond.

Revel at the Binnenhof

A short walk away from Mauritshuis is this beautiful square. It is the beating heart and historic center of the city. The Binnenhof is filled with parliament and government buildings such as the Ministry of General Affairs. Since the space is open to the public it’s one of the best free things to do in the Hague. Stroll around and admire the monumental buildings, architecture, and stunning hall. If you’re lucky you might even run into the prime minister or other government officials at work!

The Peace Palace

The most iconic and photographed building in Den Haag is the Peace Palace. Housing the International Court of Justice this palace is known for its position of peace and justice. It’s an absolutely beautiful building that is worth the visit and a must-do when visiting the Hague.

Mini Holland Madurodam

Go to Madurodam when visiting the Hague

Don’t have enough time to see all of the Netherlands during your short stay? Then come visit Madurodam park to see Dutch iconic landmarks, history, and cultural heritage. Madurodam is an amusement park full of miniatures and replica models showcasing what makes this country so unique. There are windmills, flower fields, castles, Schipol Airport – a literal mini-Holland! It’s a great experience for kids and families. However, if you like miniature models, I believe Madurodam deserves a one-time visit because of its great attention to detail.

Chill at the Beach When Visiting the Hague

Any travel tips or guides for Den Haag will have you check out Scheveningen. And with reason, it makes sense because this is the most popular seaside resort in the Netherlands. But when the weather is nice and sunny everyone and their mother’s mother will be here. That’s why I recommend going a bit further to Kijkduin! Not only is the beach area less crowded but there are a number of cool beach bars and restaurants. In the Hague, there are plenty of restaurants, bars, clubs along the strand.

I love that there’s a mini Holland! I’ll definitely be checking that out when I make it to the Netherlands.
