In the heart of the Eifel region of Germany, lies the charming town of Monschau. With its storybook-like ambiance, this destination seems almost too good to be true. From the winding cobblestone streets to the enchanting half-timbered houses, every inch of Monschau exudes old-world charm.

During our recent trip to Germany, we couldn’t resist taking a scenic drive from Cologne to this enchanting town, and we were not disappointed. Whether you’re a history buff, a nature lover, or looking for a relaxing vacation, Monschau has something for everyone.

What is Monschau known for?

Monschau is known for its fairytale-like charm and historical significance. As you wander through the town’s narrow cobblestone streets and winding alleys, you’ll be surrounded by German half-timbered houses.

In fact, many of these picturesque buildings are classified as historical monuments. Monschau’s enchanting atmosphere has made it a popular destination for artists and photographers. History buffs will appreciate the town’s fascinating past as a hub of the textile industry and its location near the Belgian border.

What is the history of Monschau Germany?

Monschau has a rich history that dates back to the 12th century when it was a thriving center of textile production in the Eifel Region. However, this industry declined in the 20th century. Monschau shifted its focus to tourism, which has become its primary source of income. Today, over 2 million visitors come to Monschau each year to experience its charming architecture and scenic beauty.

Monschau Germany tower

During World War II, Monschau suffered damage like many other German towns, but it was able to preserve much of its unique beauty. After the war, the town underwent significant restoration efforts, which ensured that Monschau’s stunning half-timbered houses, historic landmarks, and cobblestone streets have been preserved for future generations to enjoy.

Where to stay in this charming town

When it comes to finding the perfect place to stay in Monschau, you can’t go wrong with a traditional home that offers breathtaking views of the surrounding natural beauty.

View of Monschau Germany from second story window

During our visit, we stayed in a charming second-story house that provided stunning vistas of the Eifel Mountains and lush trees. We were treated to a pinch-me moment when a rainbow appeared after a rainstorm, adding to the already magical ambiance.

View of the Rur River

One of the highlights of our stay was being able to hear the sounds of the nearby Rur River, which flowed just below our window. In fact, the river runs throughout the city center, and its soothing sounds can be heard from most corners of the town.

If you’re looking for a serene and unforgettable stay in Monschau, I highly recommend finding a cozy home or guesthouse. This way you can soak in the town’s natural beauty and tranquil atmosphere.

What to do in Monschau

Although Monschau is a small town covering only 36.53 square miles, it’s packed with a wide range of things to see and do. History enthusiasts can explore the town’s rich cultural heritage by visiting the Monschau Castle, the Red House Museum, and the Rotes Haus Museum, which offer fascinating insights into the town’s past.

Art lovers will appreciate the many galleries and studios that showcase the works of local artists. And for those who want to get out and explore the town’s natural beauty, there are plenty of hiking and biking trails that offer stunning views of the Eifel Mountains and the Rur River.

Explore the Red House

One of the most striking buildings in Monschau is the Red House, named after the vibrant bricks that were used to construct it. This beautiful Baroque-style house, built in 1752, belonged to the Scheibler cloth-making dynasty and is now open to the public as a museum.

Visitors can step back in time and get a glimpse of how the wealthy lived during the 18th century. It exhibits luxurious furnishings, artwork, and decor of the era.

Check out Monschau’s historic mustard mill

One of the most unique and interesting places to visit in Monschau is the historical mustard mill. This family-owned business has been producing mustard for over 100 years.

They use traditional techniques that have been passed down through the generations. Visitors can tour the mill and see how mustard is made, from the grinding of the mustard seeds to the mixing of the ingredients. They also offer a variety of delicious and unique mustard flavors, such as fig and honey with poppy seeds, which are available for purchase in their shop.

Dining options + what to eat

While Monschau may be a small town, it has a number of cafes and dining options for visitors to try. However, with limited seating and early closing times, it’s important to make reservations in advance to avoid disappointment.

We discovered a gastropub called VAT 60, run by a friendly Dutch owner who made us feel right at home. The pub serves a great selection of special beers and whiskeys, and the food is equally impressive. We highly recommend trying the local specialty of pepper steak with mustard sauce, paired with a hearty beer. With its warm atmosphere and friendly service, VAT 60 is the perfect spot for a relaxing evening in Monschau.

The perfect getaway in Germany: Will you be visiting?

Monschau Germany is a hidden gem in the Eifel region that offers a peaceful escape from the fast-paced cities nearby. With its enchanting charm, rich history, and stunning scenery, it’s no surprise that it has become a popular destination for travelers looking to experience the best of Germany.
