Heading to Düsseldorf for a short city break? This vibrant German city is the perfect destination for anyone seeking a unique blend of culture, cuisine, and nightlife. As a frequent traveler, I was immediately drawn to Düsseldorf’s charm and was surprised by what I experienced. In this travel guide, I’ll provide you with tips on the best things to see and do during a 48-hour stay in Düsseldorf.

Which is nicer Cologne or Düsseldorf?

Are you torn between visiting Cologne or Dusseldorf? Each city has its own unique features and appeals to different types of travelers. While Cologne is larger and boasts more historical landmarks, Dusseldorf is a vibrant metropolis known for its high-end fashion and international companies.

If you’re looking for a budget-friendly option, Cologne may be the way to go. However, if you want to experience a blend of modernity and tradition, Düsseldorf should be the ideal spot.

Where to stay to experience the best of the city

Ruby Leni Hotel & Bar

If you’re looking for the perfect place to stay in Düsseldorf, look no further than the Ruby Leni Hotel and Bar. From the moment we stepped through the doors, we knew we were in for a treat. This stylish hotel boasts modern rooms and amenities, making it a top choice for travelers of all kinds.

Located next to the famous Königsallee, the hotel offers convenience and comfort at a reasonable price. We were pleasantly surprised to receive a free drink voucher upon arrival, which we used at the hotel’s cozy bar. Clean, tidy, and with friendly staff, our stay at the Ruby Leni was nothing short of excellent.

Window shop for designer & luxury goods at Königsallee

If you’re a fan of designer goods and high-end luxury brands, then Königsallee (aka the Kö) is the perfect destination for you. This bustling shopping street in the heart of the city is renowned for its luxury brand stores, designer boutiques, and chic cafes. Strolling down the tree-lined boulevard and admiring the canal, it’s easy to feel transported to the Champs-Élysées in Paris.

The Kö offers an unparalleled shopping experience, with the latest fashion trends and exclusive items available in every store. If you’re looking to indulge in some high-end retail therapy or enjoy people-watching, Königsallee is the place for you.

Don’t forget to keep an eye out for the endless parade of luxury cars, from Ferraris to Porsches, that add to the allure of this glamorous shopping district.

Head to Little Tokyo for authentic Japanese food in Düsseldorf

If you’re a fan of Japanese cuisine, a visit to Little Tokyo in Düsseldorf is an absolute must.

Home to one of the largest Japanese communities in Europe, this vibrant neighborhood is a foodie’s paradise, with plenty of authentic restaurants, supermarkets, and shops to explore.

Small shop in Little Tokyo

As someone living in Europe and struggling to find truly authentic Japanese food, I was thrilled to discover this gem.

Having Taiyaki in Little Toyko Düsseldorf

I highly recommend trying the street food specialty Taiyaki, which I was delighted to find in a soft-serve form on a warm day. But be warned, the popular restaurants can have long queues, so be sure to book ahead to avoid disappointment.

Whether you’re looking for sushi, ramen, or other Japanese delicacies, Little Tokyo is a must-visit destination for any food lover in Düsseldorf. And while you’re there, don’t forget to stock up on authentic Asian products that can be hard to find in other cities and towns.

Find serenity in the Japanese Garden of Nordpark, Düsseldorf

Nordpark is an urban sanctuary that provides a respite from the hustle and bustle of the city.

As you stroll through the park’s meandering paths, you’ll come across a hidden gem – the serene and picturesque Japanese Garden. It’s a tranquil oasis that feels like a world away from the busy streets of Düsseldorf.

The Japanese garden in Noord Park

The garden is meticulously maintained, featuring a pond with colorful koi fish, a small waterfall, and bonsai trees. You’ll find yourself lost in thought as you sit and admire the garden’s stunning Japanese sculptures and other features. For those who appreciate the beauty of nature, a visit to this enchanting garden is a must.

Have a taste of the local beer

If you’re a beer lover, you can’t leave Düsseldorf without trying its signature Altbier. This unique brew is exclusive to the city and has a deep, copper hue with a malty, slightly bitter flavor.

It’s the perfect way to immerse yourself in Düsseldorf’s culture and traditions. But be careful not to call it “Kölsch” – that’s the beer of Cologne, and the two cities have a friendly rivalry.

If you’re looking for a truly authentic German dining experience, look no further than Brewery Schumacher, the oldest brewery in Düsseldorf. Situated in the heart of the city, this brewery restaurant offers a cozy and inviting atmosphere and a menu featuring hearty and traditional German dishes.

what to do in Düsseldorf - have the Veal Schnitzel at Brewery Schumacher

Don’t miss out on their exceptional Altbier, perfectly paired with their homemade veal Schnitzel, a true delight for your taste buds.

Take in the scenic views of Düsseldorf from the Rhine Embankment Promenade

Looking at the view along the Rhine river

If you’re looking for a relaxing way to spend an afternoon in Düsseldorf, then head to the Rhine Embankment Promenade. This picturesque pathway runs alongside the Rhine River and offers stunning views of the city skyline.

Rhine Embankment Promenade

Whether you’re looking to take a leisurely stroll or just sit back and soak up the atmosphere, this is the perfect place to do so. Keep your eyes peeled for barges and boats as they make their way up and down the river. Along the way, you’ll find plenty of restaurants and bars, so be sure to stop and grab a drink or a bite to eat.

Explore the “Longest Bar in the World”

What is Dusseldorf Germany known for - the longest bar in the world!

If you’re looking for a night out on the town, head to the Old Town, known as “the longest bar in the world”. With over 300 bars, pubs, and clubs, this bustling area is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike.

Despite its reputation as a party hotspot, the Altstadt also boasts some historic charm, with quaint cafes and traditional German architecture lining the streets. As night falls, the area comes alive with crowds spilling out onto the streets, creating a vibrant atmosphere that is hard to resist.

Explore the ancient ruins of Kaiserpfalz Kaiserswerth

Kaiserwerth Castle

Nestled along the picturesque banks of the Rhine lies the ancient castle ruins of Kaiserpfalz Kaiserswerth, a must-visit historical monument in Düsseldorf. Step back in time to the 12th century and explore the remains of what was once a formidable fortress.

From the towering walls to the turrets and archways, the scale and grandeur of the castle will leave you in awe. And with its strategic location high above the river, it’s easy to imagine the importance of this fortress in defending against potential invaders.

While there isn’t much left of the castle today, each corner and nook of the ruins provide a fascinating glimpse into its past. Don’t miss out on this unforgettable journey back in time.
