I’m a fellow buitenlander-inwoner in NL, and I’m having difficulty with Dutch for highly specific reasons:
-The language breaks, it does not bend: People can’t understand you unless you pronounce each vowel perfectly, something which is a foreign concept in English (spoken all over the world with vastly different — yet totally intelligible — accents).
-It’s hermetic, so aside from from 19th-century French and mid-20th-century English loanwords, Dutch hasn’t been penetrated by the Latin and Greek suffixes and prefixes we’re used to in English.
-The grammar is byzantine, difficult even by Germanic standards; word order is triggered in a cascading series of rules which appear arbitrary to this learner.
-Dutch is larded with small, nigh-untranslatable words which append the meaning of a sentence depending on their use, i.e. “well eens,” “nog,” “steeds,” and “nog steeds.”
